West Virginia’s Board of Directors has voted unanimously to oppose any
expansion of gambling in the State Of West Virginia, including the
“Table Games Referendum” which will be decided by voters in four
counties of our state in the next few weeks.
The Board
believes that gambling in general causes a severe negative impact on
families in particular and society as a whole as well as a weakening of
entire communities. Proponents of the issue promise a positive economic
impact, but the truth is that independent studies show that gambling
creates no new wealth. It merely shuffles economic resources from one
part of the economy to another. The sad truth is that our state
government has become addicted to the gambling revenue and preys on
those who can least afford the activity. The government then attempts to
make us all feel good by showing photos of small children and senior
citizens who supposedly benefit from the revenue. They never show
pictures of the victims; the fatherless children, bankrupt adults and
folks who spend the grocery money on gambling.
“Evil
flourishes when good men do nothing.” It is time for those who know the
real truth to take a stand against this evil industry. Arm yourself with
the facts and be bold in your defense of decency.
